This coal-fired facility is a 1,650-megawatt, electric generating facility -- part of the Missouri Basin Power Project (MBPP). According to a web page related to the Laramie River Station, the power station cost $1.6 billion to build, and it is one of the largest consumer-owned, power supply projects in the United States. Overall, the project provides electric power to more than 100 rural electric cooperatives and nearly 80 municipal electric systems serving more than 2 million people in Colorado, the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. The nearby Grayrocks Dam and Reservoir, which is located on the Laramie River about seven miles east of the station, is the principal water supply for the power plant. The water is used for steam and evaporative cooling of the plant. The reservoir is also used for recreation, with boat ramps and other facilities available. Finally, the Tri-State and Basin Electric company constructed and operate an extensive transmission line network as part of the project. According to the web page, this includes 536 miles of 345-kilovolt line, 133 miles of 230-kilovolt line and ancillary substations and switching facilities. This transmission network extends into Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming and ties Laramie River Station into other existing power grids. Platte 12.33 Old Yellowstone Highway
320 Wyoming 320 was designated along what is now Wyoming 789 between Lander and Shoshoni between 1939 and 1950. It was originally U.S. 320 between 1926 and 1938. 344 From Junction Wyoming 193 at Story north to Junction Wyoming 193 at Banner; either cosigned with U.S. 87 or a "secret" designation for U.S. 87 between the two Wyoming 193 junctions. According to Jeremy Clevenger, U.S. 87 is not cosigned as Wyoming Highway 344 between the two Wyoming Highway 193 junctions. At least it wasn't when I was last there in August 1996." A section of Wyoming Highway 344 may be closed permanently due to a landslide. Traffic has had to take Wyoming Highway 193 as an alternate route. As a result, it is possible that U.S. 87 will be rerouted to Wyoming Highway 193 or cosigned with Interstate 90 from Exit 44 north to Montana. Either way, U.S. 87 would be routed off State Highway 344 unless the roadway is reconstructed. Mileposts increase from north to south. Milepost 38.90 is the state of the route at Junction Wyoming 193 (MP 106.19). There is one milepost equation at 42.49AH=42.46BK, which marks the Johnson-Sheridan County Line. The route ends at Milepost 43.82 where it intersects Wyoming 193 (MP 100.00AH). Sheridan 4.95 U.S. 87

Wyoming 345 and U.S. 14 overlap between Mileposts 12.80 and 12.85. At Milepost 12.89, Wyoming 345 leaves Ranchester, and it meets Interstate 90 and U.S. 14-87 (MP 14.62) at Milepost 19.27 (this is the Acme Interchange). Wyoming 345 passes over the Tongue River at Milepost 20.23, and the route ends at Milepost 21.14 at its junction with Acme Access Road. Wyoming 345 between the Montana State Line and Interstate 90 was originally U.S. 87. This section of U.S. 87 was the last to be decommissioned in favor of the interstate; in March 1985, when Interstate 90 was completed, the Interstate Highway System in Wyoming was completed. At the same time, U.S. 87 was rerouted to Interstate 90, and U.S. 87 north of Ranchester became Wyoming 345. Sheridan 21.14 -

Sublette 6.17 Daniel-Merna Road
370 From Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 Exit 111 southeast to the Rock Springs Regional Airport. Signed only as "Airport Road" from the Interstate, with one sign indicating "Baxter Road." There are no Wyoming 370 shields along the Interstate. Mileposts increase from north to south. The airport sits on top of a large bluff, and Wyoming 370 travels in wide arcs up to the top of the hill. The location of the airport on a bluff makes this one of the most interesting airport approaches by airplane. Milepost 0.00 is Junction Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 (MP 111.16). There is a Union Pacific Railroad Separation at Milepost 0.66 and a milepost equation for realignment at 1.34BK=1.37AH. The airport is at Milepost 4.66. Sweetwater 4.63 Baxter Road/Airport Road
371 From Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 at Exit 122 north to Superior. Mileposts increase from south to north. Milepost 0.00 is at Junction Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 (MP 122.27). The route passes through the town of Superior between Mileposts 6.78 and 7.16. Wyoming 371 ends shortly thereafter, at Milepost 7.30. Superior is an old coal mining town that used to have more people than Rock Springs. Today is it just a shadow of its old self. This town's rise and fall is indicative of the boom and bust cycle of many Wyoming towns dependent on mineral wealth. Driving on Wyoming 371, one must wonder if this is truly a "Superior Road." Sweetwater 7.30 Superior Road
372 From U.S. 189 just south of the Fontenelle Reservoir southeast to the Interstate 80, U.S. 30, and Wyoming 374 junction just west of Jamestown (Exit 83). In 1994, this road was being reconstructed and widened to accommodate additional traffic due to the various mining and oil exploration operations north of Green River. This road seems scenic when you drive north toward Jackson; on your way back, it seems ugly after seeing the grandeur of Jackson Hole and the Yellowstone Plateau. Sweetwater; Lincoln 19.00 La Barge Road
373 This route has been decommissioned and is now known as part of the expanded U.S. 191. Prior to 1982, when U.S. 191 was U.S. 187, the portion of U.S. 191 south of Interstate 80 (Flaming Gorge Road, from I-80 and U.S. 30 Exit #99 south to the Utah-Wyoming Border) was Wyoming 373. At the state line, the road continued as Utah 260 south to Dutch John. When U.S. 191 was realigned in 1982, both of these routes were deleted. Wyoming 373 may have been planned as part of the proposed but never adopted northern extension of U.S. 163 along the path of current U.S. 191. Sweetwater DEAD East Flaming Gorge Road; U.S. 191
374 Wyo. 374 is broken into two segments; it is the Interstate 80 frontage road from Cedar Mountain Road (at Interstate 80 Exit 61) east to U.S. 30 near Granger and again from Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 Exit 68 at Little America east to Business Loop I-80 and Business U.S. 30 (Flaming Gorge Way) in Green River. Mileposts increase from west to east. Wyoming begins at Milepost 61.59 at its junction with Interstate 80 (MP 61.59) and has its route break at Milepost 66.39 at Junction U.S. 30 (MP 99.54). The route resumes at Milepost 69.49 at Junction Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 (MP 68.97) in Little America. There is a Union Pacific Railroad Separation at Milepost 77.30 and Milepost 82.67. The Black's Fork River is at Milepost 78.13, and Wyoming 374 meets Wyoming 374 (La Barge Road) at Milepost 83.56. Wyoming 374 crosses and intersects Interstate 80 and U.S. 30 (MP 83.01) at Milepost 83.67. The route crosses the Green River to enter Jamestown at Milepost 87.17, and it enters the city of Green River at Milepost 90.03. Wyoming 374 ends at Milepost 90.14 at its junction with Business Loop I-80 and U.S. 30 (To Wyoming 530) (P-52, MP 89.69).

Wyoming 374 is the original U.S. 30. The original route of U.S. 30 is mostly frontage for Interstate 80, but the parts that are designated are: Business Loop I-80 through Bridger Valley, Wyoming 374 from near Granger to Green River, Wyoming 76 between Rawlins and Sinclair, Wyoming 225 (Otto Road) west of Cheyenne, and the various business loops through the cities. The Interstate 80 frontage road (Wyoming 374) provides primary access to Jamestown, a western "suburb" of Green River that sits alongside a hill above the river.

At the floor of the valley (alongside the river) is a nine-hole golf course -- the Rolling Green Golf Course. Wyoming 374 also accesses the five trona mines that line Interstate 80 between Exits 68 and 83: Solvay Minerals, FMC, OCI, General Chemical, and Texas Gulf (as of 1995, but these have likely changed). Church and Dwight and Arm and Hammer have operations here too. As a result, Wyoming 374 is heavily traveled by trucks and other such vehicles. In early 1997, the five trona mines were operated by Rhone Poulenc, FMC, General Chemical, Solvay, and Texas Gulf. Some have plans to expand their operations, thus continuing the mining boom of this region. Wyoming 374 is not signed at any of its interactions with Interstate 80. During the Summer of 1997, Exit #89 (West Green River Business Loop) was closed due to bridge reconstruction and realignment. During that time, locals used the Wyoming 372 and 374 Exit 83 to get into town, while through travelers followed the construction signs that instructed travelers to take the East Green River Business Loop exit (Exit 91).

Mileposts increase from west to east. Milepost 0.00 is the western terminus at Junction Business Loop I-80 and Business U.S. 30 (P-53, MP 103.59), which is locally known as Dewar Drive. At Milepost 0.26 is a Union Pacific Railroad Separation. Milepost 2.35 is Junction Wyoming 430 South (MP 0.00), and Milepost 2.52 is the Hampshire Street Overpass. Wyoming 376 used to continue in a counterclockwise direction from its current end to connect back to U.S. 187 (Elk Street). Since U.S. 191 was routed onto the Interstate north of Rock Springs, this portion of Elk Street is unnumbered. However, WyoDOT maintains the section of Elk Street between Business Loop I-80 and Interstate 80. It is milemarked in the highway log as U.S. 191, although signage shows U.S. 191 bypassing the town via Interstate 80. Elk Street and the Blairtown Connector Road (part of which is also WyoDOT-maintained) would make a good U.S. 191 business loop, though. The northeast corner of the circumferential is not currently maintained by WyoDOT.

Southwestern Wyoming towns rely on mining for their welfare: coal in Rock Springs and trona in Green River. While the trona mines are younger, the coal mines have been around for generations. In fact, Rock Springs has many miles of coal tunnels underneath the town. These abandoned tunnels have filled with groundwater and have begun to collapse, causing parts of downtown to collapse as well.

The commute for power plant workers who live in Rock Springs is 30 miles each way, to and from Rock Springs. The commute just got quicker as a result of the 75 miles per hour speed limit on the Interstate, which was implemented after the repeal of the National 55 miles per hour Speed Limit in the mid-1990s. At its southern end, where Wyoming 377 parallels Interstate 80, the route was once part of the original U.S. 30. Sweetwater 1.96 Point of Rocks Road
