U.S. Highway 95 - Southbound (Henderson to California)

Southbound U.S. 95
U.S. 95 southbound merges with Interstate 515 & U.S. 93 between Interstate 15 and Henderson. See Nevada @ RockyMountainRoads - Interstate 515 Southbound for photos.
U.S. 93 & 95 cross over Foothills Drive beyond the end of Interstate 515. U.S. 93 & 95 continue another 2.3 miles along a four-lane divided highway to their split. U.S. 93 traffic bound for Hoover Dam is advised of the prohibition of trucks and buses. The restriction was applied to the crossing of Hoover Dam after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Photo taken 10/19/04.
U.S. 93 and U.S. 95 continue along their joined segment en route to Railroad Pass and Boulder City. Due to the construction of the Hoover Dam Bypass, U.S. 93 traffic should expect delays over the dam. U.S. 93 will cross a new high-level bridge to the south of the dam by 2008. Read more about the 3.5-mile alignment at Hoover Dam Bypass. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Nearing Railroad Pass (el. 2,373 ft) on U.S. 93 & 95 southbound. Railroad pass derives its name from a now abandoned railroad line between Hoover and Boulder City. Railroad crossing lights remain from the former crossing. Photo taken 10/19/04.
U.S. 95 splits from U.S. 93 southbound to Searchlight, Laughlin (via Nevada 163 east), and Needles, California in one mile. Photo taken 10/19/04.
Approaching the Railroad Pass Hotel Casino traffic light on U.S. 93 & 95 southbound at Railroad Pass. The signal governs the left-turn movements to/from the hotel. Through traffic bypasses the traffic light. Photo taken 10/19/04.
The next exit along southbound is Exit 54, where U.S. 93 remains on the mainline freeway en route to Boulder City, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Hoover Dam. U.S. 95 meanwhile exits onto a two-lane stretch that extends from Boulder City south to Laughlin and onward into California. Photo taken 10/19/04.
U.S. 95 splits from U.S. 93 south at a diamond interchange. U.S. 95 reaches Searchlight in 36 miles and junction Nevada 163 in 56 miles. Nevada 163 heads east 20 miles to the Laughlin and Bullhead City, Arizona area. U.S. 93 continues east toward downtown Boulder City. Photo taken 10/19/04.

U.S. 93 Detour and 95 southbound trailblazers posted at the base of the ramp from southbound U.S. 93-95. The U.S. 93 detour provides the bypass route for trucks and buses in lieu of Hoover Dam. Photos taken 02/16/04 & 10/19/04.
View of the vast Mojave Desert along southbound U.S. 95 after the U.S. 93 interchange. U.S. 95 never enters any populated areas in Boulder City; instead, the highway begins an extremely crowded trek south toward Searchlight, Cal-Nev-Ari, and Needles, with connections via Nevada 163 to Laughlin. Photos taken 02/16/04 & 10/19/04.
For the remainder of U.S. 95 in Nevada, headlights are required. This stretch of highway, with its extensive sight distances and relatively flat character, combine with heavy traffic and impatient drivers to form a potentially lethal mix. Plans call for U.S. 95 between Laughlin and Boulder City to be upgraded to a four-lane highway, and parts of this new highway are already in place near Searchlight. Photo taken 02/16/04.

This basin is criss-crossed by several sets of power lines, most of which originate from the power plants and substations surrounding Hoover Dam and the Colorado River dam network south of Hoover Dam. Photos taken 02/16/04.

The taller electric power transmission line brings power generated at the fossil fuel generating station located in the valley next to Laughlin to the power grid, and the smaller power transmission line brings electricity to the grid from the hydroelectric facility at Davis Dam located north of Laughlin and Bullhead City. Photo taken 02/16/04.
After passing through Cal-Nev-Ari, U.S. 95 southbound finally reaches Nevada 163, the last intersection before U.S. 95 enters California. Nevada 163 leads due east toward Laughlin; U.S. 95 heads south to Interstate 40 and Needles. Photo taken 02/16/04.
The daytime headlight section of U.S. 95 comes to an end as the highway reaches Nevada 163. Photo taken 02/16/04.
U.S. 95 south continues straight ahead to Needles, Blythe, and Yuma; Nevada 163 leads east to Laughlin and Davis Dam, with a connection to Arizona 95 south to Bullhead City and Arizona 68 east to Kingman. Photo taken 02/16/04.
Southbound U.S. 95 at Junction Nevada 163. U.S. 95 exits the Silver State and enters the Golden State just south of here; U.S. 95 has the unique distinction of being the only route to enter and leave the Golden State without ending in the Golden State. Photo taken 02/16/04.
