U.S. Highway 40 - Utah U.S. Highway 189 - Utah

U.S. Highway 40 & 189 Utah

U.S. 40 begins its cross country journey at Silver Creek Junction, Utah. The federal highway used to begin in San Francisco, California, but the birth of the Interstate system doomed its track from Salt Lake City westward due to the construction of Interstate 80. Interstate 80 covers most of original path of U.S. 40 from Park City, Utah westward into northern California. Thus U.S. 40 saw truncation and now begins at Interstate 80 & U.S. 189 in northern Utah.

The announcement that Utah and Salt Lake City in general would host the 2002 Winter Olympic Games put the U.S. 40 routing from Park City to Heber City on the fast track for an upgrade. To improve access to the Park City ski resort areas, a freeway was built to carry U.S. 40 & 189 southward from Interstate 80 to Heber City. The limited-access highway bypasses Park City to the east, providing access via interchanges and connecting roads. The freeway carries its own exit numbers based upon U.S. 40 mileage and may someday join the Interstate system.

U.S. Highway 40 East
The first of many U.S. 40 eastbound reassurance shields posted along the Silver Creek Junction to Atlantic City, New Jersey route. U.S. 40 and its hidden companion (U.S. 189) stem southward from Interstate 80 (Exit 146) 18 miles to Heber City. From there U.S. 40 eastbound turns toward Duchesne and Vernal. U.S. 189 continues southward through Provo Canyon to junction U.S. 89 at Provo. Photo taken 09/08/05.
Exit 2 departs U.S. 40 east & 189 south quickly for Silver Creek Drive and Silver Summit Parkway. Silver Summit represents a residential area to the northeast of Park City. Photo taken 09/08/05.
U.S. 40 mileage sign posted just south of the Exit 2 diamond interchange at Silver Summit. Listed here are Heber City, Vernal, a town in northeastern Utah where U.S. 40 & 191 split, and Denver, Colorado. U.S. 40 merges with Interstate 70 & U.S. 6 en route to Denver in western Colorado near Empire. Photo taken 09/08/05.
Next in line for southbound travelers along U.S. 40 & 189 is the junction with Utah 248 (Kearns Boulevard). Utah 248, omitted from Exit 4 guide signs, travels 24 miles east from Utah 224 in Park City to Utah 32 in Kamas. Photo taken 09/08/05.
Southbound at the Exit 4 off-ramp to Utah 248. A diamond interchange provides the second access point into the Park City resort areas to the west. Utah 248 reaches the Summit County town of Kamas 11.3 miles to the east. Photo taken 09/08/05.
U.S. Highway 40 west & 189 north
U.S. 40 westbound reassurance marker posted after the Utah 248 (Kearns Boulevard) on-ramp from Exit 4. Utah ignores the U.S. 189 overlap with U.S. 40 in its signing practices. Photo taken 09/08/05.
U.S. 40 west & U.S. 189 north prepare for their junction with Interstate 80 at Silver Creek Junction. Exit 2 departs the freeway one half mile ahead for Silver Summit. Photo taken 09/08/05.

Northbound at the Exit 2 ramp departure to Silver Creek Drive east and Silver Summit Parkway west. U.S. 189 northbound joins Interstate 80 eastbound via Exit 1 one half mile ahead. The federal highway joins the freeway silently from Silver Creek Junction eastward to the Wyoming state line. Photo taken 09/08/05.
A small sign advises motorists of the Silver Creek Road connection via Exit 1. Silver Creek Road spurs northward from the U.S. 40 & 189 interchange with Interstate 80 into Silver Creek Junction. Photo taken 09/08/05.
U.S. 40 east & U.S. 189 northbound at the Silver Creek Drive overpass within Exit 2. Ramps to Interstate 80 partition into their respective components just north of Silver Summit. The freeway defaults onto Interstate 80 westbound for the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Photo taken 09/08/05.
U.S. 189 turns northward onto Interstate 80 east via Exit 1. Silver Creek Junction traffic should also use Exit 1 for Silver Creek Road north. Cheyenne, Wyoming lies 412 miles to the east along Interstate 80. Photo taken 09/08/05.
The final westbound U.S. 40 shield resides along the Exit 1 off-ramp to Interstate 80 east and Silver Creek Road north. An end shield may lie at the single point urban interchange (SPUI) ahead. Photo taken 09/08/05.
Interstate 80 east & U.S. 189 north prepare to depart the Exit 1 roadway. The former partial-cloverleaf interchange saw reconstruction into a SPUI to coincide with the U.S. 40 freeway upgrade for the 2002 Olympics. Therefore motorists may still access Interstate 80 west from the SPUI on-ramp ahead from the segregated right-hand side of the freeway. Photo taken 09/08/05.
