Nevada 604 is Las Vegas Boulevard from Jean to Apex following the old alignment of U.S. 91. As of 2002, most of Nevada 604 through the famed Las Vegas Strip was removed from the Nevada State Highway system (specifically, Nevada 604 between Russell Road and Sahara Avenue). On the official map of the Nevada State Route System, Nevada 604 appears as unmaintained highway (since Clark County has taken over responsibility for that section). For our purposes, it's easier to group all of Las Vegas Boulevard under the Nevada 604 designation. NDOT removed some of the sparse route shields; the Nevada 604 reassurance shield that used to reside in front of the MGM Grand Resort was gone by 2004.
Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard north
Passing by the Luxor resort, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593). The Tropicana resort and the MGM Grand resort marquees are visible on the east side of the boulevard. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The left three lanes turn west onto Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue, while the right lane connects to Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue east to McCarran Airport and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. A pedestrian bridge connecting the Excalibur and Tropicana resorts passes overhead. There are no at-grade crosswalks at this busy intersection. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Tropicana Avenue at this massive traffic signal. A dozen lanes come into this intersection from all directions. Turn right to follow Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593) east to McCarran International Airport and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). Turn left to follow Nevada 593 west to Interstate 15 en route to Los Angeles or downtown Las Vegas. Continue straight ahead to follow Las Vegas Boulevard through the famous Las Vegas Strip (in the unincorporated community of Paradise). Photo taken 03/29/08.
This ground level view shows northbound Las Vegas Boulevard turning onto westbound Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Looking from the pedestrian bridge between the New York New York resort and the MGM Grand resort, this view shows Las Vegas Boulevard looking north at a rare moment with almost no traffic queued at the signal with Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593) just south of here. Note the eight southbound lanes (including three left turn lanes!) and four northbound lanes. Photos taken 03/29/08.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard passes by the MGM Grand resort (hotel/casino). In 2000 and 2002, a north Nevada 604 reassurance shield assembly was posted on a pole near the pedestrian bridge over Las Vegas Boulevard at Tropicana Avenue. The reassurance shield for Nevada 604 was gone by 2004 due to the decommissioning of Nevada 604 between Russell Road and Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue. Photos taken 11/12/00 and 01/20/02.
Again looking from the NYNY-MGM Grand pedeestrian bridge, this view shows northbound Las Vegas Boulevard after the intersection with Nevada 593/Tropicana Avenue at night. Color abounds in all direction in the neon capital of the world. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard passes by the Barbary Coast resort at the intersection with Flamingo Drive. The Flamingo is located just beyond this intersection. Photo taken 01/20/02.
Some distance north, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue after passing by the Circus Circus resort. The Sahara resort is located on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard, and the Stratosphere Las Vegas resort comes into view. A "downtown" trailblazer is posted in the landscaped median of Las Vegas Boulevard. Photo taken 04/01/06.
The Sahara resort marquee marks the northernmost resort located in unincorporated Clark County along South Las Vegas Boulevard. At Sahara Avenue, the boulevard will enter the city of Las Vegas for the first time. Las Vegas, a Spanish word that translates to "the meadows" in English, was established in 1905 and incorporated as a city in 1911. When gambling was legalized in Las Vegas in March 1931, the city began its inexorable growth. In 2000, the official Census population was 478,434 people within the city of Las Vegas. This excludes the heavily populated unincorporated areas of Clark County, including the popular Las Vegas Strip. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Nevada 589/Sahara Avenue at this traffic signal. The next major intersection is adjacent to the Stratosphere Las Vegas resort. Who knew Ivana Trump was selling Las Vegas condos in 2006? Photo taken 04/01/06.
At the foot of the Stratosphere tower, a much smaller Holiday Motel (which likely harkens back to the old U.S. 91-466 days) appears on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Now in the city of Las Vegas, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches Baltimore Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/06.
After passing by the massive Stratosphere Las Vegas resort, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets East St. Louis Avenue and Main Street at this intersection. Turn left to follow former Nevada 601/Main Street (former Alternate U.S. 91) north to downtown Las Vegas; turn right to follow former Nevada 605/Flamingo Road south to McCarran International Airport. Continue straight ahead along the old alignment of U.S. 91-466 (former Nevada 604). Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Oakey Avenue at this traffic signal. Photo taken 04/01/06.
After the traffic signal with Wyoming Avenue, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard prepares to split with Fourth Street north into downtown Las Vegas. Fourth Avenue is a one-way street that parallels Las Vegas Boulevard from here north to near Interstate 515 and U.S. 93-95. Photo taken 04/01/06.
At the split between Fourth Street and Las Vegas Boulevard, a "Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas" sign is posted at the split between the two streets. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Nevada 159/Charleston Avenue at this traffic signal. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Continuing to travel in a northeasterly direction, Las Vegas Boulevard intersects Gass Avenue at this traffic signal. Photo taken 04/01/06.
The next traffic signal along northbound is with Bonneville Avenue, a one-way street traveling eastbound. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches Carson Avenue. The Fremont Street Experience is one block ahead on the left. Photo taken 04/01/06.
One block later, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Fremont Avenue southeast to Nevada 582 (right turn). No left is permitted since the Fremont Street Experience is closed to traffic. Parking is available on-street or in nearby lots and garages. This intersection is notable historically for the place where U.S. 466 turned southeast toward Kingman, Arizona, and U.S. 93 merged onto U.S. 91 north toward North Las Vegas. With the coming of the freeways and the elimination of U.S. 91 and U.S. 466 from Nevada, this intersection is relegated to not being in the state highway system (as Nevada 582 begins two blocks east of here, at 7th Street). Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Ogden Avenue at this traffic signal. Photo taken 04/01/06.
The next intersection along northbound Las Vegas Boulevard is with Stewart Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Leaving downtown Las Vegas, northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches its junction with Interstate 515 and U.S. 93-95. Use Interstate 515 north to Ely (via U.S. 93) and Reno (via U.S. 95) and south to Phoenix (via U.S. 93) and Needles (via U.S. 95). Photo taken 04/01/06.
A freeway entrance shield assembly for Interstate 515 and U.S. 93-95 south is posted at the next traffic signal; however the mast arm traffic signal refers to the freeway at U.S. 95. Photos taken 04/01/06.
Now traveling north on Las Vegas Boulevard (Nevada 604), this traffic signal and shield assembly are located at the left turn from Las Vegas Boulevard to Interstate 515 and U.S. 93-95 north. Again note the mast arm for the traffic signal, which shows the freeway name as "US-95." Photo taken 03/29/08.
After the Interstate 515 interchange, the next signalized intersection on Las Vegas Boulevard north is with Nevada 579/Bonanza Way. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches the driveway to Cashman Center. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Between Cashman Center and Washington Avenue, Las Vegas Boulevard passes by Heritage Park, Las Vegas Mormon Fort, museum, and library. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Las Vegas Boulevard meets Washington Avenue at this intersection. Turn left to connect back with Interstate 15. At this point, Las Vegas Bouelvard briefly turns due north. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Between Foremaster Lane and Owens Avenue, Las Vegas Boulevard passes by the Woodlawn Cemetery on the east side of the street. Photo taken 04/01/06.
At Owens Avenue, Las Vegas Boulevard leaves the city of Las Vegas and enters the city of North Las Vegas (population 115,488 as of 2000 Census). At this point, Nevada 604 and state maintenance again resume, although there are no signs advising of this. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Shortly thereafter, the right two lanes turn northeast to continue on Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard leaves the city of Las Vegas and enters the city of North Las Vegas. At this point, Main Street (former Nevada 601 or Alternate U.S. 91) merges back with Las Vegas Boulevard (former U.S. 91-93). Photo taken 04/01/06.
Northbound Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard meets Nevada 147/Lake Mead Boulevard at this traffic signal. Turn left to follow Nevada 147 west to Interstate 15. Turn right to follow Nevada 147 east to Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard south
In the city of North Las Vegas, southbound Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard approaches the Strip 91 Motel, which gets its name from being on Las Vegas Boulevard and on the old alignment of U.S. 91 and U.S. 93. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Soon after the Strip 91 Motel, southbound Nevada 604 meets Nevada 147/Lake Mead Boulevard at this traffic signal. Photo taken 04/01/06.
South of downtown Las Vegas, southbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches the intersection with Baltimore Avenue near the foot of the mighty Stratosphere Las Vegas tower. Photo taken 04/01/06.
An Interstate 15 trailblazer shield is posted on southbound Las Vegas Boulevard prior to the Sahara Avenue (Nevada 589) intersection. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Las Vegas Boulevard leaves the city of Las Vegas and enters unincorporated Clark County upon crossing Sahara Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/06.
After the Sahara Avenue intersection, some of the Strip landmarks such as Circus Circus and the Wynn resort come into view on southbound Las Vegas Boulevard. Photo taken 04/01/06.
After the intersection with Flamingo Road (Nevada 592), southbound Las Vegas Boulevard passes by the Bellagio resort on the west and the Bally's and Paris resorts on the east side. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Southbound Las Vegas Boulevard approaches its intersection with Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593). This traffic signal governs the flow of an incredible amount of traffic each day, as the intersection features ten to twelve lanes in each direction. The resorts at this intersection are: Tropicana (southeast corner), Excalibur (southwest corner), New York New York (northwest corner), and MGM Grand (northeast corner). This view is from the pedestrian bridge between New York New York and MGM Grant. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Looking south from the pedestrian bridge between the Tropicana resort and the Excalibur resort, this view looks southbound along Las Vegas Boulevard after the Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593) signalized intersection. Both the Luxor and Mandalay Bay resorts have entrances from Las Vegas Boulevard on the west side. Photo taken 03/29/08.
This Nevada 604 south shield was posted south of the Las Vegas Strip as the state route parallels Interstate 15 on its historic U.S. 91 alignment. Reassurance shields for Nevada 604 are fairly uncommon. Photo taken 11/12/00.
Scenes Pertaining to Nevada 604/Las Vegas Boulevard
New York New York Resort
This view shows the entrance into the New York New York resort from the pedestrian bridge that crosses Las Vegas Boulevard between MGM Grand and New York New York. THe skyline for New York New York is visible behind the entrance. This popular casino, which was built in the late 1990s to mimic New York City, showcases replicas of many famous New York City atractions, including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the New York City skyline. The skyline features many buildings from mid-town Manhattan, but it does not show the ill-fated World Trade Center towers. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Still on the MGM Grand-NYNY pedestrian bridge, this view shows the skyline created by the facade of the New York New York casino. A fast-paced roller coaster wraps around the scaled skyscrapers, offering a thrill ride that brings riders close to these buildings. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Now looking north from the front of the Excalibur resort, this view shows a different look at the New York New York skyline, including the heights reached by the Manhattan Express roller coaster. Photo taken 03/29/08.
A third view shows the New York New York skyline at night from the MGM Grand resort. Photo taken 03/29/08.
Walking south on Las Vegas Boulevard, this marquee for the New York New York resort dominates the view prior to Tropicana Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/06.

The green-hued MGM Grand resort and hotel comes into view on the north side of Tropicana Avenue. Photos taken 03/28/08 and 01/20/02.
Crossing over Las Vegas Boulevard (walking east parallel to Tropicana Avenue) on the pedestrian bridge connecting New York New York with MGM Grand, this view shows the pedestrian bridge entrance to the MGM Grand resort. While it appears that these pedestrian bridges only connect the casinos, there are escalators and elevators outside the casinos that allow pedestrians to access street level without entering the casinos themselves. Photo taken 03/29/08.
The MGM Grand lion stands guard at the southeastern corner of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. Photos taken 03/29/08 and 03/28/08.
On a service road parallel to Nevada 604 is this errant Interstate 15 California shield, which points the way from the MGM Grand parking lot to the freeway. It should say Interstate 15 Nevada, considering Las Vegas is located in Nevada, not California. Still, this is a neat error to see, and one must wonder if the sign were fabricated in the Golden State. Photos taken 01/20/02.
Excalibur Resort
At night, the Excalibur resort is awash in colors that conjure a medieval feel from the days of Rohan. This view looks southwest from the pedestrian bridge between the MGM Grand and New York New York resorts at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593). Photo taken 03/28/08.
A wizard greets visitors to the Excalibur resort. Photo taken 04/01/06.
This view of the Excalibur hotel can be seen from the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue (Nevada 593) looking southwest. Photo taken 01/20/02.
Monte Carlo Resort
Looking west from Las Vegas Boulevard north of the New York New York resort is the Monte Carlo resort. This high-rise hotel tower is situated between New York New York and City Center. Photo taken 03/28/08.
The Monte Carlo has a grand entrance on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Planet Hollywood (former Aladdin) Resort
On the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard across from the Monte Carlo is the Planet Hollywood (PH) resort; this building was recently converted from the Aladdin resort. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Paris Resort
Still on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard across from the City Center and north of the Planet Hollywood resort is the Paris resort. This view shows the replica of the Eiffel Tower and the hot-air balloon shaped marquee. Photo taken 03/28/08.
The hot-air balloon shaped marquee partially obscures the Arc d'Triumph, which is another replica of the real one found in Paris. Photos taken 03/28/08.
Looking east from the Bellagio, this view shows the proximity between the Paris resort and the older Bally's resort. There is a direct indoor connection between the casinos in both resorts. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Bally's Resort
The entrance to Bally's resort from Las Vegas Boulevard features two movable sidewalks that pass through an arch of neon that changes colors. Photo taken 04/01/06.
A view from Flamingo Road (Nevada 592) looking south looks at the main entrance to Bally's resort as well as the Eiffel Tower replica. Photo taken 04/01/06.
Bellagio Resort
Now on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard north of the City Center and across from the Paris resort is the Bellagio resort. Home to the famous water fountain shows (which occur every 15 minutes each evening until midnight), the Bellagio features high-end suites, an art museum, large greenhouse, and a variety of other attractions. Photo taken 03/28/08.
A large man-made lake separates the Bellagio resort from Las Vegas Boulevard. Elegant handrails separate the west sidewalk from the lake, which is where the fountain shows are conducted. Caesar's Palace also has a presence on the lake. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Along the southbound Nevada 604 (Las Vegas Boulevard), the Bellagio fountains dance regularly to music. Having this much water at play in a desert environment seems wasteful, but these fountains are a sight to behold. The Bellagio is located on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard, just north of New York New York. Photos taken 01/20/02.
This suite of photos captures the fountains at another performance. Good stuff! Photos taken 04/01/06.
Caesar's Palace Resort
Looking north across the Bellagio lake is the remodeled hotel tower for Caesar's Palace resort. The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace were recently remodeled. Photo taken 03/28/08.
Flamingo Resort
This view of the Flamingo resort, located on the northeast corner of the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, shows its proximity to Bally's resort. Photo taken 03/28/08.
