Interstate 80 - Utah

Interstate 80 Utah (Salt Lake City Metro)

Interstate 80 straddles the northern portions of the Beehive State across the Great Salt Lake Desert, Salt Lake City metro, and the northern Wasatch Mountain range. Among the highlights along the route are endless miles of open desert where the curvature of the earth can be seen over the vast emptiness. The canyons that guide the freeway east from Salt Lake City to Echo Junction are quite scenic and steep. Interstate 80 also shares a short overlap with Interstate 15 to the west of downtown Salt Lake City.

Interstate 80 west
Interstate 80 enters the Salt Lake City limits after the merge with Interstate 215 northbound traffic. A partial "Y" interchange (Exit 127) brings additional drivers onto westbound from Utah 195 (South 2300 East). Photo taken 09/08/05.
Seven interchanges serve Salt Lake City on Interstate 80 westbound. The second joins the freeway with South 1300 East (Utah 181) at the Sugar House section of the city. Photo taken 09/08/05.

Next in line for Interstate 80 travelers is the Exit 125 diamond interchange with South 700 East (Utah 71). Although ignored by Exit 125 guide signs, South 700 East carries Utah 71 between Murray and Salt Lake City. The state highway comprises 20.3 miles of pavement between Utah 68 (Redwood Road) and Utah 168. Photo taken 09/08/05.
Drivers departing Interstate 80 west for Utah 71 (South 700 East) descend from the freeway at Exit 125. Utah 71 travels 3.9 miles south to the Van Winkle Expressway before turning south onto South 900 East. Interstate 15 north & 80 west
Shifting to the Interstate 15 Exit 305 collector/distributor roadway, drivers from Interstate 80 are afforded the opportunity to access Exit 305B (West 2100 South). West 2100 South carries Utah 201 east from 900 West and the 2100 South Freeway to its east end at junction U.S. 89 (State Street). Interstate 80 West

Interstate 80 returns to its westward trajectory alongside West 200 South. The next interchange joins the freeway with Utah 68 (Redwood Road) at Exit 118. Utah 68 travels northward along Utah Lake into the south suburbs of Saratoga Springs, Bluffdale, Riverton, South Jordan, West Jordan, and Taylorsville before entering Salt Lake City. Attached to the Utah 68 (Redwood Road) over crossing is the Exit 117 overhead for Interstate 215. No control points are issued for Interstate 215 overall. Some signs do display "Belt Route" however. Exit 115A departs Interstate 80 westbound for Salt Lake City International Airport. The ramp merges with other ramps from Utah 186 and Interstate 215. Otherwise, Utah 186 merges onto Interstate 80 via a partial "Y" interchange from West North Temple just west of the Interstate 215 junction. Westbound travelers from Utah 186 merge onto the Exit 115 c/d roadway formed by the Interstate 215 on-ramps. Named after former Utah governor Norm Bangerter, Utah 154 constitutes a controlled-access expressway from Interstate 80 south to Interstate 15 at Draper. The state highway loops 23.8 miles.
