Interstate 70 - Summit County (Eastbound)

Index

The Interstate 70 page is separated into the following sections:

Interstate 70 East
Eastbound Interstate 70 scene around Milepost 205, just beyond the U.S. 6/Colorado 9 interchange. Although there was not much snow at this elevation at the time this photo was taken, there was plenty at the Eisenhower Tunnel, which is situated at a much higher elevation. Photo taken 02/02/02.
Interstate 70 continues to ascend up the grade to the Eisenhower Tunnel in this picture of eastbound. Note the large cut taken off the mountain to the left (north) to make room for the six-lane freeway in the first picture, and notice how the amount of snow grows as the freeway climbs. Photos taken 02/02/02.
Eastbound Interstate 70 east ascending the western slope leading to the Eisenhower Tunnel from Silverthorne in Summit County. The tunnel is not yet visible in this picture. This parking pull-out is available for motorists to pull off the highway in case of overheating or other problems. Eisenhower Tunnel is just ahead, and the last photo in this series shows the tunnel in the distance. The scenery through here on this February day was unbelievable. Photos taken 02/02/02.
Eastbound Interstate 70 entering the Eisenhower Tunnel. Not only is this the highest tunnel on the Interstate highway system at 11,013 feet, it is also the highest point on any part of the Interstate highway system. Photos taken 02/02/02.
The Eisenhower Tunnel is more than a mile long, and this picture shows that even the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel is not immediately visible (even though in this case, it is the truck in the right lane that is preventing us from seeing the other end). While in the tunnel, Interstate 70 leaves Summit County and enters Clear Creek County. Photo taken 02/02/02.
