Colorado 470 (Eastbound)

Highway 470 is split into the following pages:

Colorado 470 - Eastbound/Outer Loop
We begin our journey along eastbound Colorado 470 immediately after the split from Interstate 70 near Golden. Photo taken 08/29/04.

The next exit along eastbound Colorado 470 is Exit 9, Ken Caryl Avenue. Between the Kipling Parkway and Ken Caryl Avenue interchanges, Colorado 470 turns from southbound to eastbound. The next several interchanges (Exit 11, Kipling Parkway and Exit 13, Junction Colorado 121/Wadsworth Boulevard) will serve streets that primarily travel north-south rather than east-west. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 9, Ken Caryl Avenue. To the east, Ken Caryl Avenue serves Ken Caryl Ranch Plains, Columbine Knolls, and Columbine Hills. To the west, Ken Caryl Avenue serves Ken Caryl Ranch and The Valley. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit along eastbound is Exit 11, Kipling Parkway. Shown as Jefferson County Route 25 on some maps, there are no county route markers along Kipling Parkway. Kipling Parkway travels north (parallel to Wadsworth Boulevard), leading to Lakewood and Wheat Ridge. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next two exits along eastbound are Exit 11, Kipling Parkway and Exit 13, Junction Colorado 121/Wadsworth Boulevard. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Westbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 11, Kipling Parkway. Use Kipling Parkway south to the Mountain Technology Center (Schuller International) and north to the neighborhoods of Ken Caryl Ranch Plains and Stony Creek. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Colorado 121, which follows Wadsworth Boulevard along a north-south path through the metropolitan area, intersects Colorado 470 near Milepost 13. To the south, Colorado 121 serves Chatfield State Park and the Lockheed Martin facility located at the south end of Wadsworth Boulevard (shown on some maps as an continuation of South Platte Canyon Road). Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 approaches Exit 13, Junction Colorado 121, Wadsworth Boulevard. As noted on the signage, Colorado 470 does not have exit numbers, but we refer to the exits based on the mileposting system on Colorado 470. Photo taken 02/02/02.
Chatfield State Park features hiking, biking, camping, swimming, hot air ballooning, and many other activities. The Chatfield Reservoir was created by a damming of the South Platte River. Waterton Canyon is accessible south of the Lockheed Martin plant, along South Platte River Road in Pike National Forest. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 13, Junction Colorado 121, Wadsworth Boulevard. From here, Colorado 121 (Wadsworth Boulevard) travels north through the metropolitan area, serving the cities of Lakewood, Wheat Ridge, Arvada, and Westminster before ending at U.S. 287 in Broomfield. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit along eastbound Colorado 470 is Exit 16, Junction U.S. 85/Santa Fe Drive, three miles. Photo taken 08/26/04.
This scene on Eastbound Colorado 470 is typical of the southwestern portion of the Denver semi-beltway. Colorado 470 is locally known as "C-470," even though no other Colorado state route is given the "C-" prefix. The "470" designation is the result of an original plan to construct an Interstate 470 around the southwestern quadrant of the Denver metropolitan area. However, the Interstate 470 designation was dropped as a result of the federal funds being redirected toward the 16th Street Mall downtown. The freeway was constructed anyway, but it was done with local funds. Colorado 470 connects directly with the relatively new E-470 tollway, which provides a beltway on the eastern half of the Denver metropolitan area. Photo taken 08/26/04.
This mileage sign along eastbound Colorado 470 provides the distance to Exit 16, Junction U.S. 85, Santa Fe Drive and Exit 17, Lucent Boulevard. U.S. 85 follow its own route along Santa Fe Drive, but it is not well-signed on its shared segments with Interstate 25 or Interstate 70 around downtown Denver or on Interstate 25 south of Castle Rock. Lucent Boulevard, the next exit, was named for the telecommunications company. Several telecommunications companies have a presence in Denver, including Qwest Communications, which bought out former "baby bell" U.S. West. Photo taken 08/26/04.
U.S. 85 is a near-expressway north of Colorado 470, following a heavily traveled commuter route through Littleton, Englewood, and Sheridan before entering the city/county of Denver. A light rail facility parallels U.S. 85 for a significant portion of the expressway route. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 16, Junction U.S. 85, Santa Fe Drive. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit along westbound Colorado 470 is Exit 17, Lucent Boulevard. Unlike most of the other streets that have interchanged with Colorado 470 thus far, Lucent Boulevard does not travel north into the Denver city street grid since McLellan Reservoir blocks access into Arapahoe County. Originally known as Highlands Ranch Boulevard, the road was renamed Lucent Boulevard due to the proximity of the Lucent offices. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 17, Lucent Boulevard. This office park is one of several in this part of the metropolitan area, partially due to the proximity of the Denver Technology Center. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit on westbound Colorado 470 is Exit 19, Broadway. Like University Boulevard, Broadway is another arterial street that originates in downtown Denver (at the railroad viaduct where Brighton Boulevard converts into Broadway Street north of Blake Street. Broadway then travels due south through downtown and the Denver communities of Golden Triangle, Byers, and Overland. Continuing south, Broadway crosses the cities of Englewood and Littleton before meeting Colorado 470 just south of the Arapahoe-Douglas County Line. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 20, Broadway. Development along Colorado 470 between U.S. 285 and Interstate 25 has increased dramatically, especially due to its proximity to the Denver Tech Center. This section of the belt route is much more developed than the section north of U.S. 285. Photo taken 02/02/02.
The next exit along eastbound is Colorado 177, which follows University Boulevard north and serves the Forest Park, Cherry Knolls, Dream House Acres, and Cherry Hills Village neighborhoods. Upon reaching U.S. 285/Hampden Avenue (Arapahoe-Denver County Line), the state route ends, but University Boulevard continues north into the City of Denver, passing by Denver University before crossing Interstate 25/U.S. 87 at Exit 205. University Boulevard continues north as part of the Denver city street grid, changing to the one-way couplet of York Street and Josephine Street at Cherry Creek Mall (at Alameda Avenue). York/Josephine Streets continue north to serve Denver Botanical Gardens, City Park, and eventually Interstate 70 near Milepost 276. Photo taken 08/26/04.
This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three exits on eastbound: Exit 20, Junction Colorado 177/University Boulevard; Exit 24, Quebec Street; and Exit 25, Yosemite Street. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 20, Junction Colorado 177/University Boulevard. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit along eastbound Colorado 470 is Exit 24, Quebec Street. Quebec Street is a north-south road that appears in various parts of Denver. It is best known as the gateway to the former Stapleton International Airport, on the section it shares with Colorado 35. However, that stretch of Quebec Street does not connect with this stretch, located near the Interstate 25/Colorado 470 interchange. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Quebec Street leads north into Foxridge in Arapahoe County and south to Lone Tree and Highland Heritage Regional Park. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 24, Quebec Street. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The next exit along eastbound is Exit 25, Yosemite Street. This is the final interchange prior to the Interstate 25/Colorado 470/E-470 interchange. Photo taken 08/26/04.
A mileage sign indicates the distance to Yosemite Street, E-470 (Extension 470), and Interstate 25 north/south. Note that Colorado 470 is three lanes on eastbound between Quebec Street and Interstate 25/E-470. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 reaches Exit 25, Yosemite Street. Photo taken 08/26/04.
The final exit along eastbound Colorado 470 is Exit 26, Junction Interstate 25 and E-470. This is the last exit before the E-470 tollway. The large mall to the north (left) of the roadway here is relatively new. Photo taken 08/26/04.
This unusual mileage sign shows the distance to Interstate 25 and E-470 along eastbound Colorado 470. The mileage sign shows that traffic looking to use Interstate 25 northbound or southbound should stay to the right, and traffic continuing onto E-470 should remain in the left lanes. An overhead sign here might be more effective to convey this. Note the text-based signage for "I-25" rather than the use of shields; this is standard in Colorado. Peoria Street is the first exit along northbound E-470. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Use E-470 northbound to Denver International Airport; this route avoids most of the congestion of the Interstate 25 and Interstate 225 corridors, but a toll is charged. E-470 also offers a much less traveled route to bypass Interstate 25 and downtown Denver. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Eastbound Colorado 470 ends at this massive stack interchange at Junction Interstate 25. Note the control city on E-470 of Limon, which is also used for Eastbound Interstate 70 throughout the Denver metropolitan area. Interstate 25 marks the terminus of both Colorado 470 and E-470; there are no END shields in place. Photo taken 08/26/04.
Now on the transition ramp from Colorado 470 to Interstate 25, the left lane transitions to northbound Interstate 25, while the right lane transitions to southbound Interstate 25. Photo taken 08/26/04.
